ITF Inspectorate in Croatia
The ITF Inspectorate in Croatia operates within the Seafarers’ Union of Croatia as a team of two inspectors and one coordinator operating along the Adriatic coast.
Our mission is based on several key principles to which we are fully committed:
- Protection of seafarers’ rights – our main goal is to ensure that the rights of all seafarers on
ships docking in Croatian ports are respected in accordance with international conventions
and maritime regulations. We can provide support, advice and assistance to seafarers in
solving their problems with employers, irrespective of whether the ships are covered by ITF
collective agreements. - Compliance with international standards – we work in accordance with the international
standards related to the rights of seafarers and the living and working conditions of
seafarers on ships. Our presence along the Adriatic coast ensures that ships docking in our
ports must comply with these standards, which primarily refers to the MLC 2006, SOLAS,
MARPOL and STCW conventions. - Inspections and campaigns against ships and shipowners – our inspectors carry out rigorous
monitoring of ships to ensure that the safety and quality of ships are maintained. We fight
against substandard ships and their owners to protect seafarers and the environment. - Strengthening inter-union relations – we strive to promote solidarity between seafarers,
dockers and all workers in the maritime industry. Our cooperation with other ITF
inspectorates around the world contributes to strengthening inter-union relations and to the
joint realisation of our goals.
In accordance with the FOC (Flags of Convenience) campaign, which deals with the problem
of ships sailing under the flags of countries with low standards and insufficient regulation,
the ITF Inspectorate in Croatia works and cooperates with all strategic partners in the
maritime industry, especially with harbourmaster offices (PSC).
The ITF Inspectorate in Croatia is here to help and support the seafarers who turn to it in
order jointly to create safer and fairer working conditions for seafarers.
